Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday declared the period from 25 May 2026 to 25 May 2027 as “Nazrul Year” to commemorate the life, works and philosophy of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
The announcement came during a cultural programme held in Trishal, Mymensingh, marking the poet’s 127th birth anniversary. The event was part of a three-day national celebration titled “Tobu Amare Debo Na Bhulite,” organised at Nazrul Mancha by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister inaugurated the festival and highlighted the importance of Nazrul’s ideals in shaping a humane, democratic and culturally enriched Bangladesh.
Tarique Rahman said the country must establish the rule of law and revive long-standing social, religious and cultural values to build a compassionate society. According to him, Nazrul’s writings and philosophy remain highly relevant in addressing contemporary moral and social challenges.
Describing Nazrul as a symbol of Bangladesh’s national identity and consciousness, the Prime Minister said the poet’s message of humanity, equality and resistance against injustice should be passed on to future generations.
He also urged the Ministries of Cultural Affairs and Tourism to conduct feasibility studies for declaring Trishal a “Nazrul City” in recognition of the poet’s deep historical connection with the area.
During the programme, the premier handed over the “Nazrul Padak” and honorary crests to two individuals for their contributions to Nazrul research and the promotion of his philosophy. He also unveiled a commemorative publication dedicated to the national poet.
The event was attended by cabinet members, lawmakers, cultural personalities and senior officials, including Khilkhil Kazi and representatives of the Kabi Nazrul Institute.
