Police on Sunday submitted the charge-sheet against Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter in connection with the rape and murder of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter in Dhaka’s Pallabi area.
The charge-sheet was filed before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in the afternoon by the Investigating Officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Ohiduzzaman of Pallabi Police Station. Earlier in the morning, both accused were produced before the court as part of the legal procedure.
Officials confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Saturday handed over the DNA test report to the investigating officer, which played a key role in the completion of the investigation and submission of the charge-sheet.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday that the trial of the case could be completed within five to seven days, reflecting the government’s expectation of a swift judicial process in the high-profile case.
According to the case details, Ramisa Akter, daughter of Abdul Hannan Molla, was allegedly raped and murdered by Sohel Rana, who was a tenant in a neighbouring flat. The victim was reportedly lured into his room, where the crime took place.
Following the incident, Ramisa’s decapitated body was recovered from beneath a bed, while her severed head was found hidden inside a bucket in the bathroom, according to police statements.
After the incident, Swapna Akter was detained by neighbours at the scene and later handed over to police. Sohel Rana managed to flee by breaking through a window grille but was later arrested the same evening from Fatullah in Narayanganj following a police operation.
The case has now moved to the prosecution stage with the submission of the charge-sheet.
