Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has expressed hope that the trial in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter could be completed within five to seven working days after the submission of the charge-sheet.
The home minister made the remarks during a briefing on Sunday, stating that the charge-sheet in the case would be submitted to the court on the same day. He added that the trial process in the special court may conclude within a short period, although he noted that the timeline ultimately depends on court proceedings.
“I hope the court will ensure the highest punishment,” he said.
According to sources, police have already completed the draft of the final charge sheet and are currently finishing technical formalities, including data entry into the Crime Data Management System software before official submission.
The charge-sheet was submitted by police, and it included the names of the prime accused Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter. Swapna Akter has already been produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in connection with the case.
Earlier, Sohel Rana reportedly gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before a magistrate in Dhaka last Wednesday.
Investigating officials said that while major parts of the probe have been completed, further inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident is still ongoing. Law enforcement agencies continue to carry out legal procedures as the case progresses towards trial.
Authorities have emphasised that the judicial process will now move forward following the formal submission of the charge-sheet.
