Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Sunday said that in today’s modern era, any information without supporting data is nothing more than a personal opinion or idea.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a training programme for Public Relations Officers (PROs) from various ministries, held at the conference room of the Press Information Department (PID) in Dhaka.
The minister said that without accurate and verified data, any public relations or publicity strategy becomes unreliable and lacks credibility. He urged officials to ensure that all government communications and messaging are based on clear, objective, and verifiable data.
Swapon noted that the current age is driven by data and statistics, and it is not possible to assess field-level government activities or evaluate the effectiveness of official communication based only on assumptions or verbal feedback.
He further said that in order to maintain authenticity and public trust, all information must be backed by proper data sources. According to him, information without data is perceived in society as individual opinion rather than institutional fact.
Highlighting the growing importance of digital analytics, psychography, and online footprint analysis in modern public relations, the minister said that it is now possible to extract detailed insights from digital platforms. He mentioned that engagement metrics such as likes, dislikes, and public comments can help build a clearer picture of public opinion.
Swapon also advised public relations officers to strengthen their capacity as a “digital force” capable of handling perception management and countering misinformation or negative propaganda through data-based communication strategies.
He added that presenting ministry achievements through statistics and verified data can significantly enhance credibility, reduce confusion, and shape accurate public perception.
State Minister for Information Yasser Khan Choudhury attended the event as special guest, while Chief Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed chaired the programme. Additional Secretary Mohammed Yasin was also present there.
