Three Bangladeshi nationals were killed in a landmine explosion near the Myanmar border in Naikhongchhari Upazila of Bandarban District on Sunday.
The incident occurred around midday in the zero-line area close to border pillars 42 and 43 along the Bangladesh-Myanmar frontier. The victims had reportedly gone to the area to visit their cropland when the explosion took place.
The deceased were identified as Leraia, 41, son of Suniong Chakma; Ongke Mong, 50, son of Neomong Chakma; and Chingka Ong, son of Oimong Chakma. All three were residents of Bhalukia Para under Ward No-9 of Ghumdhum Union in Naikhongchhari Upazila.
According to Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Enamul Hasan, the blast occurred in the afternoon while the individuals were in the border-adjacent area for agricultural purposes.
Following the explosion, local authorities were informed, and police later recovered the bodies from the scene. The exact cause of the landmine explosion is yet to be officially confirmed, but the area is known for security risks due to its proximity to the Myanmar border.
Officials have not provided further details regarding the origin of the explosive device, and an investigation into the incident is expected.
The deaths have raised renewed concerns over safety in remote border areas where residents often travel for farming and livelihood activities despite potential risks.
Authorities said monitoring and security measures in the border region remain in place, while further steps may be taken depending on the findings of the ongoing assessment.
