The outgoing Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, has called for a modern, forward-looking partnership between New Delhi and Dhaka, underpinned by mutual respect and shared economic prosperity.

Preparing to leave Dhaka for his new post as India’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Verma released a farewell message titled “Aabaar Dekha Hobe” (We will meet again). In his departing remarks, he characterised the bilateral relationship as unique, drawing on deeply entwined geography, culture, and the shared historical legacy of the 1971 Liberation War.

Reflecting upon a nearly four-year tenure that saw various political transitions and occasional diplomatic hurdles, the envoy described his posting as profoundly enriching. He expressed deep gratitude for the genuine warmth and affection he and his family received from people across the nation.

Emphasising the growing economic interdependence between the two neighbouring states, Verma noted that the success of both nations is inherently linked. He stated that a prosperous Bangladesh remains entirely in India’s interest, just as a thriving India benefits Bangladesh. Over the past five decades, he observed, both countries have evolved into highly aspirational and capable societies, playing indispensable roles in maintaining peace and driving development throughout the region.

Crucially, the diplomat highlighted that continuous cooperation is vital to tackling overarching mutual challenges, particularly climate change and environmental sustainability. He stressed that robust regional integration, spearheaded by South Asia’s two largest economies, remains essential for long-term stability.

Advocating for an updated diplomatic agenda, Verma suggested that future engagements must reflect the rapidly changing capabilities and developmental priorities of both nations. He urged stakeholders on both sides of the border to view their close geographical proximity as a strategic opportunity rather than a liability.

As he concludes his diplomatic assignment in Dhaka, the outgoing envoy leaves behind a message of enduring optimism, confident that the deep-rooted cultural and economic linkages between India and Bangladesh will continue to thrive in the years to come.
