Fifteen people have died and a further six have been injured after a lorry heavily laden with steel rods overturned in the Kalihati area of Tangail.

The fatal incident occurred at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday along the Soratoil Dakkhinpara stretch of the Dhaka-Tangail highway.

According to initial reports, the victims were passengers travelling on top of the cargo, making their way towards the northern regions of Bangladesh for the upcoming Eid holidays. Their identities have not yet been formally established by the authorities.

Ataur Rahman, the officer-in-charge at the Kalihati Fire Service and Civil Defence Station, confirmed the details from the scene. He stated that the northbound vehicle was carrying both the construction materials and a group of passengers when it lost control. The lorry subsequently veered off the carriageway, plunging into a roadside ditch and overturning.

The passengers were crushed beneath the heavy steel rods and the vehicle itself. Emergency rescue teams swiftly arrived at the location, recovering the bodies of the 15 deceased and rescuing six survivors from the wreckage.

The injured individuals have been transported directly to Tangail Sadar Hospital, where they are currently receiving urgent medical treatment. Authorities are now working to identify the victims and clear the debris from the crash site.
