Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman on Tuesday said Bangladesh’s judiciary is functioning independently and judges are enjoying full freedom in carrying out their judicial responsibilities.
Speaking to reporters after attending a monthly coordination meeting at Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex in Jhenaidah, the minister said judges in Bangladesh have greater independence compared to many other countries.
He acknowledged that the country’s judicial system is struggling with a large backlog of cases, which he attributed mainly to a shortage of judges and experienced lawyers. According to him, the limited number of legal professionals capable of effectively conducting trials has slowed down efforts to dispose of pending cases.
The minister also commented on recent remarks made by Hasnat Abdullah, saying the statements amounted to contempt of court. He argued that the judiciary is operating independently, pointing to recent bail decisions involving leaders of the same political party.
Referring to comments made by NCP leaders Hasnat Abdullah and Nasiruddin Patwary over a recent incident involving party activists in Jhenaidah, the minister described their statements as politically motivated.
He rejected allegations of negligence by law enforcement agencies and said the police had fulfilled their responsibilities properly in the incident. He further maintained that judges had independently handled the matter without any outside influence.
“There is no question of failure on the part of the police or judiciary,” the minister said, adding that such comments were being made to create confusion and serve political interests.
Before speaking to journalists, the law minister participated in the monthly coordination meeting at the local health complex, where officials discussed administrative and healthcare-related issues in the upazila.
