Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has successfully removed nearly 24,000 tonnes of sacrificial animal waste from across the capital over the last two days.
The massive clean-up operation was launched immediately to keep the city clean, hygienic, and safe for residents during the Eid-ul-Azha holiday. According to official figures from the DSCC, the authorities collected a total of 23,791 tonnes of waste and safely dumped it at the central Matuail Landfill.
The bulk of the work took place on the first day of the festival, with cleaning crews working around the clock to move 14,814 tonnes of waste by midnight on Eid day.
The intensive effort continued into the second day, focusing on clearing out residential areas and the remnants of temporary cattle markets. Workers successfully collected and transferred another 8,977 tonnes of waste by midnight on the second day.
This rapid, two-day operation is vital for Dhaka’s urban health, as clearing waste quickly prevents bad odours and blocks the city’s drainage systems before the monsoon rains arrive. With the main waste now completely removed, the city corporation is focusing on washing and disinfecting the streets to restore normalcy across the capital.
