Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has led a widespread charitable campaign across the capital, distributing food, daily essentials, and clothing to underprivileged communities to mark the 45th anniversary of the death of former President Ziaur Rahman.

The initiative commenced on Saturday morning at the Rajdhani High School grounds on Manik Mia Avenue. Organised by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the day-long event combined humanitarian relief with civic outreach, offering free medical consultations and essential supplies to thousands of destitute citizens.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by senior government and civic officials, including Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque, and Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton. Following the launch at Manik Mia Avenue, Mr Rahman was scheduled to oversee identical aid distribution efforts at 16 further locations across Dhaka throughout the day.

The welfare drive is part of a broader, nationwide series of commemorative events orchestrated by the BNP and its affiliate organisations. Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister commenced the formal proceedings by laying a floral wreath at the mausoleum of Ziaur Rahman to pay his respects.

The annual commemorations hold deep historical significance for the country’s current political landscape. President Ziaur Rahman, who founded the BNP in 1978, was assassinated on 30 May 1981 at the Chittagong Circuit House during his tenure as head of state. Across Bangladesh, people traditionally observe the anniversary of his death as a day of solemn reflection and community service.
