Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman joined a special discussion programme on Sunday to mark the 45th death anniversary of the party’s founder, former President Ziaur Rahman.
The memorial event was held on Sunday afternoon at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) auditorium in the capital’s Farmgate area. The solemn gathering began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a special prayer, known as a munajat. Attendees also observed a strict one-minute silence to honour the memory of the late President.
The discussion was presided over by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who currently serves as the Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the gathering as the chief guest and addressed the party leaders and supporters present.
This specific discussion serves as a central part of the BNP’s official schedule to respectfully observe the anniversary of their founder’s passing. The party, along with its various associate bodies, carefully organised an eight-day nationwide program of tributes. These memorial events started on the 25th of May and will conclude on the 1st of June.
Ziaur Rahman, who formally established the BNP in 1978, led the nation until his life was tragically cut short. A faction of disgruntled Army officers assassinated him at the Chattogram Circuit House on the 30th of May, 1981.
