Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan has resigned from the Cabinet, citing health problems that he said were affecting his ability to perform his official responsibilities.

The resignation was submitted to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and has been accepted, according to the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.

In his resignation letter, Dipen Dewan said his physical illness had created difficulties in carrying out the ministry’s regular activities.

“Due to my physical illness, various problems are being created in carrying out the regular responsibilities of the ministry,” he wrote.

He said stepping down had become necessary to ensure the continuity of the government’s development and administrative work.

The minister added that relinquishing his position was in the broader interest of maintaining the momentum of government activities and public service delivery.

Dipen Dewan had been serving as Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs since the formation of the government following the general election held on 12 February, in which the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a landslide victory.
