Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain has said the investigation into the deaths of six newborns at Ad-din Medical College Hospital is progressing and the findings are expected to be submitted within the next three days.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, the health minister described the incident as deeply tragic and said the government is treating the matter with utmost importance. He noted that both the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) are conducting separate investigations to determine the circumstances that led to the deaths.
According to the minister, efforts are underway to ensure a thorough and evidence-based inquiry. He said the investigation will examine multiple aspects of the incident, including medical records, hospital procedures and testimonies from the mothers and families of the deceased infants.
Sakhawat Hossain said he personally visited the hospital following the incident, while the DGHS Director General also carried out an on-site inspection. In addition to the committee formed by the ministry, the DGHS has launched its own independent investigation to ensure a comprehensive review.
The minister explained that although the probe committee had initially been asked to submit its findings within three days, investigators required additional time to gather further information and verify evidence. The extension was granted to ensure the report is more accurate, practical and reliable.
He said the government wants the investigation to establish the actual causes behind the deaths and identify any lapses, if found. The final report is now expected to be submitted by 3 June.
Once the report is received, the government will disclose the findings in detail and take necessary measures based on the recommendations of the investigation committees, the minister added.
