Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salauddin Tuku on Monday called for a significant increase in domestic milk production to meet growing national demand and reduce Bangladesh’s dependence on imported dairy products.
Speaking at a discussion marking World Milk Day 2026 in Dhaka, the state minister said strengthening the country’s dairy sector is essential not only for achieving self-sufficiency in milk production but also for creating opportunities to export dairy products in the future.
The event, held at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB), was organised under the theme “Women Dairy Farmers: The Journey of Development.” Addressing participants as the chief guest, Tuku emphasised the important role women play in the growth of the dairy industry and the broader economy.
He said greater participation of women entrepreneurs in dairy farming would accelerate economic development and contribute to building a stronger and more prosperous Bangladesh. According to the minister, the increasing involvement of women in livestock and dairy activities is a positive sign for the country's social and economic progress.
Highlighting the contributions of women dairy farmers, Tuku said they deserve greater recognition and support. He stressed the need for expanded training programmes and technical assistance to help them improve productivity and strengthen their businesses.
The state minister also urged the government and relevant institutions to tailor support programmes according to the needs of local farmers and entrepreneurs. He noted that the success of individual dairy farmers ultimately contributes to national economic growth and food security.
Calling on all stakeholders in the livestock sector to work collectively, he said a sense of responsibility and cooperation is necessary to move the country forward and achieve long-term development goals.
Earlier in the day, Tuku participated in a milk distribution programme for underprivileged people in front of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) headquarters. The initiative was organised by the Veterinary Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (VAB).
He also distributed milk among orphaned children from madrasa institutions on the DLS premises. A colourful rally was later brought out to celebrate World Milk Day, passing through the Khamarbari area before ending at the KIB complex.
The discussion was chaired by DLS Director General Shahzaman Khan and attended by senior government officials, livestock experts and representatives of the dairy sector.
