Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman has called for an end to what he described as “bad journalism” driven by the competition for online views and digital engagement.

Speaking at a press conference at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Monday, where updates on government initiatives surrounding Eid-ul-Azha were shared, he said that while traditional media remains free in the country, some online platforms are increasingly circulating misleading content.

He alleged that certain digital outlets produce photo cards based on assumptions, while edited statements and videos are shared in short-form formats such as reels. According to him, such content can distort information and contribute to confusion and social disruption.

Ruman urged media organisations to act responsibly and avoid practices that prioritise online traffic over accuracy. He said journalism should not become a tool for misinformation or sensationalism in the race for views.

He also highlighted the government’s commitment to good governance and public welfare, stating that the Prime Minister remained actively engaged in official duties even during the Eid holidays. He claimed that the Prime Minister continued working throughout the festive period, including Eid day, while members of the administration also remained on duty.

Referring to post-Eid activities, he said the Prime Minister personally inspected waste management operations in Dhaka, monitoring areas where cleaning had been completed and where gaps remained, and taking administrative action where necessary.

He added that the Prime Minister works long hours daily as part of his governance responsibilities.

Ruman further noted that the current Prime Minister observed Eid-ul-Azha in the country after a long gap. He also made personal remarks reflecting emotional memories associated with former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia during the festive period.

Senior officials of the PMO, including spokesperson Mahdi Amin and other press and media officials, were present at the briefing.
