Early on Tuesday, a private vehicle collided with the back of a stationery truck on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway in the Bhanga upazila of Faridpur, killing five persons and seriously injuring two children.
The individuals who died were named as Nurjahan, 50, wife of Shahidul Islam of Ujjalpur village in Jhikargachha upazila of Jashore; her son Arif Islam, 24; Ayesha Begum, 28, wife of Ilias Hossain of the same village; Rakib, 18; and the private car's unidentified driver, approximately 25.
Ashraful Hossain, 7, and Tachfia, 3, were identified as the injured. They were all in the private car.
The private vehicle was travelling from Dhaka to Jashore when it collided with the truck that was parked on the side of the road close to Maligram Bus Stand at around four in the morning, according to Shibchar Highway Police.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mizanur Rahman of the Shibchar Highway Police Station stated that four persons died immediately while the injured were transported to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where Rakib eventually passed away from his wounds.
He stated that after learning about the tragedy, police and Bhanga Fire Service personnel conducted a rescue effort.
He said, “efforts are underway to identify the deceased driver, while the injured are undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.”
The damaged truck and private car have been seized.
Bhanga Fire Service Station Manager Abu Zafar said, “rescuers had to cut through the mangled vehicle to recover the driver’s body, as he was trapped inside following the collision.”
Police and fire service officials said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
