Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday turned down a proposal to rename the Keraniganj Technical Training Centre (TTC) after former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, directing that existing institutions should not be renamed.
He instead issued a policy directive stating that names of political or public figures may be considered for new institutions, but not for renaming already established ones, according to sources at the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
The proposal had been sent from the ministry to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking approval to rename the Keraniganj TTC as “Begum Khaleda Zia Technical Training Centre, Keraniganj.” However, the Prime Minister did not approve the request.
Officials said the Prime Minister’s instruction was clear that the current name of the institution should remain unchanged, and any future naming proposals should apply only to newly created facilities or initiatives.
The Keraniganj TTC operates under the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) and is responsible for providing vocational and technical training to young people. The centre focuses on developing skilled manpower for both domestic industries and overseas job markets.
As part of Bangladesh’s broader workforce development strategy, the TTC offers training in multiple trades aimed at improving employability and supporting overseas employment opportunities.
Government officials noted that the centre plays a key role in strengthening the country’s skilled labour force, which contributes significantly to remittance earnings and industrial productivity.
