A government-appointed investigation committee is set to submit its report on Wednesday on the deaths of six newborn babies at Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, which occurred on 27 May.
Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Md Mohsin, who heads the probe committee, said most of the investigation work has already been completed.
Confirming on Tuesday that the report is expected to be submitted within the revised deadline, he said, “We have completed almost all the work and hope to submit the probe report tomorrow.”
The incident involved six newborns, aged between one and four days, who died within a few hours starting around 6am at the hospital located in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area. Hospital authorities said two of the infants were brought dead to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) from the post-operative delivery room, while the remaining four died while undergoing treatment in the NICU.
The exact cause of death has not yet been determined. However, officials from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and relatives of the victims have pointed to possible lapses in hospital management and ventilation facilities in the post-operative room.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare formed a three-member inquiry committee on the same day, instructing it to submit its findings within three days. Later, four more members were added to the committee, and the deadline was extended to 3 June to allow further investigation.
As part of the inquiry, the committee has already recorded statements from four mothers of the deceased newborns. Officials said post-mortem examinations and inquest reports were not conducted in connection with the deaths.
