Members of Parliament (MPs) took part in an orientation programme on Wednesday aimed at strengthening their understanding of the Constitution, parliamentary procedures and legislative responsibilities as the 13th Jatiya Sangsad begins its journey.

The programme, titled “Constitution, Rules of Procedure and Parliamentary Affairs,” was held at the oath room of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat and was attended by lawmakers from different constituencies and reserved seats.

Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad presided over the event and emphasised the importance of parliamentary rules in ensuring effective legislative work and accountability. He said lawmakers have a crucial responsibility to represent citizens, uphold public trust and contribute to a transparent system of governance.

The Speaker noted that Parliament's key functions include law-making, approving the national budget and overseeing the executive branch through parliamentary scrutiny. He stressed that a thorough understanding of the Rules of Procedure is essential for MPs to participate effectively in debates, introduce motions and examine proposed legislation.

Among the special guests were Kayser Kamal, Nurul Islam Moni and Shafiqur Rahman. They highlighted the importance of responsible representation, democratic accountability and active participation in parliamentary affairs.

Representatives from the United Nations Development Programme and Switzerland also attended the programme, which is supported under the Strengthening Institutions, Policies and Services (SIPS) initiative aimed at enhancing parliamentary effectiveness.

The first group of participants included MPs from constituencies stretching from Panchagarh to Bhola and Mymensingh, along with women lawmakers elected to reserved seats. The orientation programme is scheduled to continue for two days, providing legislators with practical guidance on parliamentary traditions, procedures and responsibilities.
