Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has stressed the importance of planting trees suited to local environmental conditions, saying a scientific approach to afforestation is essential for protecting the environment and tackling the growing impacts of climate change.

Speaking at a meeting on the government's tree plantation programme at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka on Saturday, the premier said different regions of Bangladesh have distinct soil characteristics and ecological conditions. As a result, tree species should be selected based on the suitability of local environments rather than adopting a uniform approach nationwide.

According to the Prime Minister’s Press Wing, Tarique Rahman said choosing appropriate species would increase tree survival rates and help maintain ecological balance across the country.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the visible effects of climate change, noting that weather patterns have changed significantly over the years. He observed that June was once known for regular rainfall, but seasonal cycles have become increasingly unpredictable. He attributed part of these changes to the decline in forest cover and the reduction of tree populations.

Emphasising the importance of environmental conservation, Tarique Rahman said tree plantation should remain a national priority to mitigate climate risks, preserve biodiversity and ensure a healthier environment for future generations.

The meeting reviewed preparations for the government’s ambitious plan to plant 25 crore trees nationwide over the next five years. The programme is expected to play a key role in expanding forest cover and strengthening climate resilience.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to formally inaugurate the nationwide campaign on 14 June at Dulahazara in Cox's Bazar.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, Prime Minister's Principal Secretary ABM Abdus Sattar, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry Secretary Mohammed Rayhan Kaosar, Director General (DG) of Department of Environment Dr Md Lutfor Rahman, Additional DG Md Ziaul Haque, Chief Conservator of Forests Amir Hossain Chowdhury and Jamil Bashir JB, a member of the 25 crore Tree Plantation Programme Cell, among others, were also present at the meeting.
