Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has invited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time, as both countries move to strengthen bilateral ties.
The invitation was extended on Saturday during a courtesy call at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Tejgaon area of Dhaka. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met the Prime Minister during the visit and conveyed President Erdogan’s greetings.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman thanked the Turkish foreign minister for undertaking the visit. According to a press release, Hakan Fidan said his trip marked an initial step towards elevating Bangladesh–Türkiye relations to a strategic level.
Both sides agreed to institutionalise regular high-level engagement. This includes annual Foreign Office Consultations at foreign minister level and annual 2+2 meetings involving the foreign and defence ministers of both countries. They also agreed to establish a coordination mechanism under the respective foreign ministries to deepen cooperation across relevant sectors.
The discussions covered the full range of bilateral relations, with particular focus on the Rohingya crisis, climate change, trade and investment, joint production, and wider regional and international issues of mutual interest.
From the Bangladeshi side, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, State Minister Shama Obaed Islam, and Prime Minister’s Adviser for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir attended the meeting.
