Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Advocate Md Asaduzzaman has expressed the government’s satisfaction with the swift death penalty verdict handed down in the Ramisa Akter murder case.
Speaking at an emergency press conference at the Secretariat on Sunday, the minister highlighted the rapid conclusion of the trial as a benchmark for delivering swift justice in the country.
The tragic murder of the young schoolgirl in Pallabi had deeply shocked the nation. However, Md Asaduzzaman noted that the swift investigation and subsequent judicial proceedings ensured a prompt resolution. Following the incident, police submitted the formal charge sheet by 24 May, allowing the trial process to commence without delay.
The government had issued a directive to complete the trial within a month. To achieve this, the minister explained that necessary administrative and judicial steps were coordinated. With the consent of the Chief Justice, the Children’s Tribunal was able to conduct uninterrupted proceedings.
Concluding the trial in just a few working days marks a rare milestone in the country’s legal history. The minister observed that such examples of rapid case disposal remain highly limited across the subcontinent’s judicial systems.
The government now expects the higher courts to uphold the lower court’s verdict, Md Asaduzzaman added.
The minister’s remarks followed the Sunday morning ruling by the Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal, which sentenced Sohel Rana and Swapna Akter to death for the rape and murder of the second-grade student.
