A Dhaka court has granted investigators additional time to complete the supplementary probe into the murder of Inqilab Moncho convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi, extending the deadline for submitting the report until 17 June.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is conducting a further inquiry into the high-profile case, was scheduled to submit its findings on Sunday. However, the investigation officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdul Kader Bhuiyan, was unable to place the report before the court.

Following the request, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah fixed 17 June as the new date for filing the supplementary investigation report, according to court officials.

The case relates to the killing of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, a prominent figure who gained national attention during the July Uprising and later became active in campaigns demanding a ban on Awami League politics. Hadi had also announced his intention to contest the 13th parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.

On 12 December last year, he came under gun attack while conducting election-related activities near Bijoynagar in the capital. He sustained a critical gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where emergency surgery was performed. He was subsequently transferred to Evercare Hospital and later flown to Singapore for advanced treatment.

Despite medical efforts, Hadi succumbed to his injuries on 18 December.

Following the shooting, Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber filed a case on 14 December, initially accusing unidentified individuals of attempted murder. After Hadi's death, the case was converted into a murder case.

The investigation was first handled by local police before being transferred to the Detective Branch (DB). On 6 January, DB investigators submitted a chargesheet against 17 individuals, including former ward councillor Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi and former Chhatra League activist Faisal Karim Masud.

However, the complainant challenged the chargesheet through a no-confidence petition filed on 15 January, alleging shortcomings in the investigation. The court later accepted the petition and directed the CID to conduct a fresh supplementary inquiry.

The outcome of the CID investigation is now expected to play a crucial role in determining the next stage of legal proceedings in the case.
