Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has underscored the importance of maintaining objectivity in journalism, saying the media can only serve society effectively when it presents facts accurately and transparently.
Speaking at a seminar titled “Good Governance in the Banking Sector and the Role of Media” in the capital on Sunday, the minister described the media as a reflection of the state, society and modern civilisation. He said any weakness in journalistic standards could distort that reflection and undermine public confidence.
The event was organised by the Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) with support from United Commercial Bank PLC (UCB) at ERF’s Paltan office. ERF President Daulat Akhtar Mala chaired the programme, while General Secretary Abul Kashem moderated the discussion.
Swapon said objectivity remains the foundation of credible journalism and stressed the need for strong fact-checking mechanisms to ensure public trust in media reporting. According to him, transparency and access to accurate information are essential components of good governance.
Referring to the media’s role in overseeing the financial sector, the minister said responsible economic journalism can contribute significantly to improving governance and accountability in the banking industry. He noted that media scrutiny often helps identify weaknesses and encourages corrective measures.
The minister also linked banking sector reforms with broader governance initiatives, saying the government is pursuing reforms in administration, media and anti-corruption institutions. He revealed that plans are underway to establish a banking commission aimed at addressing structural challenges within the sector.
On the issue of journalists’ access to Bangladesh Bank, Swapon said the focus should be on ensuring access to information rather than physical access to specific offices or floors. He maintained that transparency is a prerequisite for accountability and good governance.
The seminar was attended by senior officials and experts, including Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Nurun Nahar, BIBM Director General Dr Md Ejazul Islam, BSEC Chairman Masrur Reaz, Financial Express Editor Shamsul Huq Zahid and UCB Managing Director Mohammad Mamdudur Rashid, among others.
Swapon concluded by encouraging journalists to continue practicing investigative and fact-based reporting in the public interest while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and objectivity.
