A child showing symptoms of measles has died at MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet, health officials said on Monday, taking the number of measles-linked deaths in the division to 66.
The child, aged 17 months, was from Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj district and died during the 24 hours leading up to Monday morning.
According to the Sylhet Divisional Office of the Directorate General of Health Services, four of the 66 deaths have been confirmed as measles through laboratory testing, while the remaining cases were recorded as suspected measles-related deaths.
Health authorities also reported that 55 new patients with measles-like symptoms were admitted to hospitals across the Sylhet division during the same 24-hour period. This brought the total number of patients receiving treatment for suspected measles to 270.
Laboratory tests confirmed three new measles infections in the division over the past day, according to the health office.
The latest figures come as Bangladesh continues to see a rise in measles-related illnesses and deaths.
Nationwide, seven more children with measles-like symptoms died in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Sunday, health authorities said.
The deaths raised the country's total number of confirmed and suspected measles-related fatalities to 620.
