Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday said the government is implementing various measures to make the police force more professional, service-oriented and responsive to the needs of the public.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat after a ceremony honouring police personnel for notable achievements in several recent cases, the minister said strengthening professionalism and morale within the force remains a key priority.
He noted that rewarding dedicated officers while taking action against misconduct would encourage greater accountability and commitment among police members.
As part of this initiative, the government recognised 15 police personnel for their exemplary performance in three significant incidents. These included the swift investigation of the Ramisa murder case through timely DNA testing and post-mortem procedures, the rescue of around 50 bus passengers at Daulatdia Ghat, and the successful resolution of a previously unsolved teenage murder case in Gazaria of Munshiganj, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
According to Salahuddin, such recognition serves as an important incentive for police officers and contributes to improving overall performance within the force.
Responding to questions from journalists, the minister said the government has overcome the image crisis that affected the police after 5 August and claimed that public confidence in law enforcement has improved significantly. He added that the police are now more people-friendly and focused on public service than before.
The minister also pointed to comparative crime statistics from 2024 and 2025, stating that crime rates have declined under the current administration and that the overall law and order situation has improved across multiple categories.
On the issue of police investigations, Salahuddin said the government is considering increasing financial allocations to strengthen investigative activities, post-mortem processes and patrol operations.
Addressing concerns about officers who had remained absconding or faced disciplinary allegations, he said strict action would continue. Departmental proceedings have already been initiated against those concerned, while individuals facing charges under the ICT Act or Penal Code will be prosecuted through the courts.
"No offender, regardless of position or status, will be exempt from legal action," the minister said.
The event was attended by Home Secretary Dr Ziauddin Ahmed, Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed and other senior officials. Certificates and financial rewards were presented to the 15 police members in recognition of their contributions.
