Bangladesh has sought Spain’s support at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to ensure a smooth transition from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category.
The request was made during a meeting between Spanish Ambassador to Bangladesh Gabriel María Sistiaga Ochoa de Chinchetru and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Monday.
During the discussions, the state minister emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly in the context of Bangladesh’s post-LDC graduation journey. She also requested Madrid’s support in international forums to help facilitate a smooth and sustainable transition.
Shama Obaed Islam further raised the issue of the prolonged Rohingya crisis, stressing the need for continued international attention and stronger global engagement to address the humanitarian situation.
The Spanish envoy congratulated Bangladesh on its election to the presidency of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly for the 2026-27 term, describing it as a significant diplomatic achievement.
Both sides discussed the importance of concluding a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Bangladesh and the European Union, viewing it as a key step towards enhancing trade and economic cooperation.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and explored new areas of collaboration, including trade, investment, supply chains, railway connectivity, education, skills development, migration, sports, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
In addition, the two sides considered the possibility of arranging future high-level visits and bilateral consultations to further strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.
The meeting also included discussions on regional and global developments, with both parties highlighting the importance of peace, stability, and enhanced international cooperation.
