The government has set a target of sending around 14 lakh Bangladeshi workers abroad in the upcoming fiscal year as part of its strategy to expand overseas employment opportunities and boost remittance inflows.
State Minister for Overseas Employment and Expatriates’ Welfare Nurul Haque Nur disclosed the plan on Monday during the second session of the 13th National Parliament. He made the remarks while responding to a question raised by Dhaka-1 lawmaker Khandaker Abu Ashfaq on behalf of Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury. The session was chaired by Deputy Speaker Kaiser Kamal.
According to figures presented in Parliament, 9,33,815 Bangladeshi workers secured employment in various countries between 1 July 2025, and 31 May 2026, reflecting continued demand for Bangladeshi labour in global markets.
The state minister said the government is prioritising the expansion of overseas job opportunities by focusing on sending more skilled and trained workers to meet international labour demand. He stressed that improving workforce skills remains a key part of the long-term employment strategy.
He further noted that efforts are underway to reopen and expand labour markets that are currently closed or restricted for Bangladeshi workers. Diplomatic and bilateral negotiations are ongoing with several countries, including Malaysia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, to resolve existing barriers and create new employment opportunities.
The minister added that strengthening labour diplomacy is central to the government’s approach, with continuous engagement aimed at securing more job placements abroad for Bangladeshi citizens.
Officials said the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to foreign remittance earnings while also addressing domestic employment pressures through increased overseas job placement.
