State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has sought Türkiye’s assistance in implementing educational programmes for homeless street children and enhancing climate resilience in Bangladesh’s most vulnerable regions.
She made the request during a meeting with a high-level delegation from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Monday, according to an official press release. The delegation was led by TIKA Vice President Dr Ali Ercan, who is currently on a four-day official visit to Bangladesh that began on 7 June.
During the discussions, Shama Obaed highlighted the importance of targeted cooperation in improving access to education for street children and strengthening preparedness and adaptation measures in climate-affected areas. She sought TIKA’s technical and development support in these priority sectors.
TIKA, which has been active in Bangladesh since 2014, has been implementing various socioeconomic and humanitarian projects across multiple development areas. Its engagement has contributed to initiatives in education, disaster management and capacity-building.
Dr Ercan acknowledged Bangladesh’s vulnerability to climate change and recommended strong participation from Bangladesh in the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP), which Türkiye is scheduled to host in November.
He reaffirmed TIKA’s continued commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s development priorities, particularly in education, disaster response and institutional capacity building.
Both sides also discussed opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation and strengthen institutional partnerships between Bangladesh and Türkiye. They expressed optimism that continued engagement would further deepen friendly relations and open new avenues for collaboration in shared areas of interest, including climate action and social development.
