Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that Bangla, philosophy and history may be removed from honours-level education, describing such claims as entirely unfounded.
Speaking to journalists after an ECNEC meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday, the minister said there has been no discussion at any policy-making level regarding the exclusion of these subjects from university honours programmes.
According to Milon, neither the government nor education authorities have considered any proposal to eliminate these traditional academic disciplines. He stressed that rumours circulating on the matter have no basis and do not reflect the government's plans for higher education.
The minister explained that current reforms in the education sector are primarily focused on expanding career-oriented and technical education to meet changing national and global demands. He said new courses and academic programmes are being introduced to equip students with skills relevant to the modern job market while strengthening collaboration between educational institutions and industries.
However, he clarified that efforts to modernise curricula and introduce market-responsive subjects should not be interpreted as a move to phase out foundational disciplines such as Bangla, philosophy or history.
Milon noted that universities regularly review and update their curricula through their respective academic councils. At the same time, initiatives are continuing to address teacher shortages and improve the overall quality of higher education.
Reassuring students, teachers and guardians, the education minister urged the public not to be influenced by misleading information or speculation. He emphasised that the inclusion of new subjects and the modernisation of academic programmes are intended to complement existing disciplines rather than replace them.
The minister reiterated that core humanities subjects remain an important part of higher education and that there is currently no plan to remove them from honours courses.
