India's newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, arrived in the country on Friday through the Benapole-Petrapole land port, underlining the importance of cross-border connectivity in relations between the two neighbours.
Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Badhe received the envoy at the Benapole land port after his arrival in the morning, according to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. His wife, Minal Trivedi, accompanied him on the journey into Bangladesh through one of the busiest border crossings between the two countries.
The high commission said the decision to enter Bangladesh through the land port carried symbolic significance, reflecting the central role that border connectivity plays in Bangladesh-India relations. The visit also coincides with India's recent efforts to modernise border administration, including the launch of a new Land Port Management System earlier this week.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced Trivedi's appointment as India's next High Commissioner to Bangladesh on 27 April.
The diplomat brings extensive political experience to the role. He previously served as India's Union Minister for Railways and as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare during the United Progressive Alliance government while representing the Trinamool Congress.
In February 2021, he left the Trinamool Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party the following month. His appointment comes at a time when Bangladesh and India continue to engage on a range of issues, including trade, connectivity, border management and regional cooperation.
