Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in the district on Saturday morning on a daylong tour to attend different programmes, including the inauguration of a canal excavation and a nationwide tree plantation campaign.

“An aircraft carrying the Prime Minister accompanied by his spouse Dr Zubaida Rahman landed at Cox’s Bazar International Airport here around 9:53 am,” Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman said.

He said earlier that the aircraft departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 9:00 am.

Tarique Rahman will begin his programmes in the district by inaugurating the re-excavation work of the Patli Canal in Pmkhali Union at 10:30 am and will address a rally there.

According to the tour schedule, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit the Dulahazara Safari Park and formally launch the nationwide tree plantation programme at Malumghat Reserve Forest as part of the government’s plan to plant 25 crore trees across the country over the next five years.

He is also scheduled to visit Pekua to offer Ziarat at the grave of Md Wasim, a martyr of the July mass uprising, and to meet his family members there.

The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stones of the newly established Pekua Municipality and Matamuhuri Upazila.

In the afternoon, the PM will address a public rally organised by the Cox’s Bazar district BNP at the Chakaria Upazila Bus Terminal.

In the evening, he will inspect the ‘Marine Drive’ road and the sea beach. Later, he will attend a civic rally at the Long Beach Hotel there before departing for the capital.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to return to Dhaka by air at night after completing his official engagements here.

This is Tarique Rahman’s first visit to Cox’s Bazar after assuming office as Prime Minister following the BNP’s landslide victory in the February 12 elections.
