Bangladesh recorded five additional child deaths linked to measles-like symptoms during the past 24 hours till Saturday morning, pushing the country's combined total of confirmed and suspected measles-related fatalities to 648, according to health authorities.
Data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) showed that all five newly reported deaths have been categorised as suspected measles fatalities. As a result, the number of suspected deaths has increased to 556, while the number of laboratory-confirmed deaths remains unchanged at 92.
Health officials also reported a continued rise in infections across the country. During the latest reporting period, 733 new suspected measles cases were identified, bringing the cumulative number of suspected infections to 84,899 since the outbreak began.
In addition, laboratory testing confirmed 63 new measles infections over the same period. The total number of confirmed cases has now reached 10,248 nationwide.
The outbreak has placed significant pressure on healthcare facilities, with tens of thousands of patients requiring medical treatment. According to DGHS figures, 69,606 individuals with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals since 15 March.
Despite the increasing number of infections, health authorities reported that a large majority of patients have recovered. Official data show that 65,852 hospitalised patients have been discharged after receiving treatment.
Public health experts continue to monitor the situation closely as authorities work to contain the spread of the disease through surveillance, treatment, and preventive measures. The latest figures indicate that measles remains a significant public health concern, particularly for children, as the country continues to record new infections and fatalities on a daily basis.
Health officials have urged continued vigilance and timely medical attention for individuals showing symptoms consistent with measles in an effort to reduce complications and prevent further loss of life.
