Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday visited the grave of Mohammad Wasim Akram, a student who was killed during the July 2024 anti-discrimination student movement, and offered ziarat in his memory.

The Prime Minister went to the grave located in Mehernama Bazarpara area of Pekua Upazila in Cox’s Bazar District in the afternoon. He recited fateha and offered prayers seeking eternal peace for the departed soul of the young student.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Cox’s Bazar-3 lawmaker Lutfur Rahman Kajal were present during the visit, along with other officials.

After offering prayers, the Prime Minister met Wasim Akram’s family members and inquired about their well-being. During the meeting, he handed over a savings certificate worth Tk20 lakh to the family of the deceased as part of government support.

Wasim Akram was killed on 16 July 2024 during a violent confrontation in Chattogram’s Muradpur area involving police, members of Chhatra League, and protesters participating in the anti-discrimination movement.

He was a fourth-year undergraduate student in the Department of Sociology at Chattogram College and was associated with the college unit of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) convening committee. He was the second among five siblings, born to Shafiul Alam and Jotsna Begum.

The visit is seen as part of ongoing government efforts to honour individuals who lost their lives during the July movement and to provide support to their families.
