Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday laid the foundation stone of the newly formed Pekua Municipality in Cox’s Bazar, marking a new stage in local administrative development in the region.

The foundation stone was laid at around 1:30pm in Pekua, after which a special prayer was held seeking success for the new municipality and its future development activities. Following the ceremony, the Prime Minister greeted the gathered public by waving his hand, drawing warm responses from attendees.

Addressing the event, Tarique Rahman recalled earlier development initiatives in the area, saying that nearly 25 years ago Begum Khaleda Zia had laid the foundation stone of Pekua Upazila. He said the establishment of the municipality under the current BNP-led government reflects continuity in the party’s focus on local development.

He added that whenever the BNP has been in state power, it has worked for the welfare of the people and the country. Even when out of power, the party has remained committed to speaking for the interests of citizens, he said.

“It is not a matter of whether BNP is in power or not. Our primary concern is the welfare of the country and its people. This is our sole commitment,” he said, emphasising what he described as the party’s people-centred political philosophy.

The Prime Minister reiterated that BNP’s core objective is to ensure development that directly benefits ordinary citizens, particularly at the local level.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam were present at the ceremony, along with other local leaders and officials.

The event is expected to mark the beginning of administrative upgrades and infrastructure development in Pekua Municipality under the new governance framework.
