Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday held a meeting with transport and engineering experts to review the progress, design and expected outcomes of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.
The discussion took place at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat. The focus of the meeting was the BRT corridor stretching from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Joydebpur in Gazipur, a major transport initiative aimed at improving connectivity between Dhaka and its northern suburban areas.
According to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Press Wing, detailed deliberations were held on various aspects of the project, including its current implementation status, infrastructure design, station management, passenger service systems, operational framework and overall efficiency.
The experts attending the meeting shared their assessments and provided recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of the project. They also highlighted areas requiring further improvement to ensure smooth operation and better passenger experience once the system becomes operational.
During the discussion, emphasis was placed on ensuring that the BRT system is designed to reduce traffic congestion, improve travel time reliability, and offer efficient public transport services along one of the country’s busiest corridors.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam, State Minister for Road Transport and Railways Habibur Rashid Habib, and top officials from the Roads and Highways Division, among others, also participated in the meeting.
Academics and transport specialists from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), including Professors Md Shamsul Haque, Mosleh Uddin Hasan, Md Hadiuzzaman and Rakib Ahsan, contributed technical insights during the discussion.
Chief Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department Moinul Hasan and other senior officials were also present at the meeting, which underscored the government’s focus on improving urban transport infrastructure through expert consultation.
