Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday called on journalists to uphold the principles of objective and responsible journalism, urging them to refrain from excessive praise of the government or any particular group and instead focus on presenting facts accurately to the public.
The remarks came during a meeting with chief executive officers and news editors of various television channels at the Secretariat. The discussion centred on the challenges facing the country’s television industry, media freedom, professional obstacles encountered by journalists, and concerns over job security in the sector.
According to Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abu Abdullah M Saleh Shibli, the premier emphasised the important role of the media not only in highlighting economic and social development but also in promoting humanitarian values and social awareness. He encouraged journalists and media organisations to contribute to positive national transformation through constructive and fact-based reporting.
During the meeting, the government’s initiative to establish an independent Media Commission was also discussed.
The press secretary said a dialogue involving relevant stakeholders is scheduled for 18 June to gather opinions and formulate a policy framework aimed at addressing long-standing issues within the media sector. He expressed optimism that collaborative efforts among stakeholders could help resolve many of the industry's existing challenges.
Representatives of journalists’ organisations also placed several demands before the government. They called for the television industry to be formally recognised as an industrial sector and urged the authorities to implement the Ninth Wage Board for journalists. The media leaders further stressed the importance of ensuring job security, improving workplace safety, and creating a more supportive environment for independent journalism.
They also sought the speedy formation of an effective Media Commission to strengthen media freedom and address structural challenges faced by journalists and broadcasting organisations across the country.
