The Ad-din Foundation has announced a major leadership change at Ad-din Medical College Hospital, with Executive Director Dr Sheikh Mohiuddin stepping down from his position in the wake of the recent deaths of six newborns at the institution.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the foundation confirmed that Dr Mohiuddin had voluntarily resigned. The organisation also announced the appointment of Professor Jamalun Nessa as the hospital’s new executive director.
The foundation said it shares the grief felt across the country over the tragic deaths and has already taken initial measures in response. According to the statement, staff members found to have been negligent during a preliminary inquiry have faced disciplinary action. Authorities have also begun reviewing existing procedures and strengthening oversight mechanisms to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Ad-din further said it is prepared to implement necessary reforms in line with government directives. The organisation noted that extensive infrastructure improvements are already underway. Three independent consultants have been engaged to oversee modifications aimed at improving ventilation, natural light and oxygen flow within the facility.
As part of the changes, the bakery located above the hospital’s corporate office has been permanently shut down. Officials said renovation and structural adjustment works are progressing rapidly as part of a broader effort to improve patient safety and healthcare standards.
Founded in 1980, the Ad-din Foundation is one of the country’s largest non-profit healthcare and education organisations. Its operations span hospitals, medical colleges, nursing institutions, health technology education and mobile healthcare services aimed at serving underprivileged communities.
The foundation currently manages nine hospitals, five medical colleges, a nursing college, four nursing institutes, an institute of health technology and a collegiate school.
According to Ad-din, the Women’s Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar alone has provided treatment to more than 1.57 crore patients over the past 29 years. Until 11 June this year, the hospital had been serving around 2,000 outpatients daily.
The institution employs 1,790 doctors, nurses and support staff, while more than 2,000 students and healthcare professionals depend on it for education and career development. Ad-din Women’s Medical College currently has 646 students, including 209 international students.
The newly appointed executive director, Professor Jamalun Nessa, recently retired voluntarily from the Department of Microbiology at Dhaka University after more than two decades of teaching. She earned her master's degree with first-class honours from the same department in 1988 and later completed a PhD at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
The foundation reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining quality healthcare services, patient safety and institutional accountability as it moves forward under new leadership.
