State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has urged the United Nations to increase humanitarian assistance worldwide while ensuring stronger participation of women in peacebuilding processes, as global crises and humanitarian needs continue to rise.
She made the remarks while speaking at the 2026 Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Affairs Segment held in New York on Wednesday, according to a press release received in Dhaka on Thursday morning.
Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to humanitarian values, she highlighted ongoing national efforts to expand social protection coverage, improve disaster preparedness, empower women, and support vulnerable groups under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The minister also addressed the UN Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), where she emphasised that women play a crucial role in sustaining peace, rebuilding societies, and promoting reconciliation. She praised Bangladeshi women peacekeepers serving in various UN missions for their contributions to global peace operations.
Expressing concern over the worsening situation of women and children in conflict zones, she stressed the urgent need to address gaps in humanitarian financing to ensure timely and adequate support for affected populations.
She further called for continued international backing for the safe, voluntary, and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
As part of her UN engagements, Shama is also scheduled to take part in a high-level panel discussion under the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment later in the day.
In addition, she will lead the Bangladesh delegation in a bilateral meeting with Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, at the UN Headquarters in New York.
