Dhaka Metropolitan Police has said it has identified no specific security threat surrounding the Awami League’s founding anniversary on 23 June, but officers remain on alert ahead of the occasion.

Speaking to reporters at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Friday, Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Nazrul Islam said the police had taken the necessary measures to ensure public safety.

“June 23 is the founding anniversary of a political party. We are on alert centring on the day,” he said in response to questions from journalists.

The police official said security checkpoints remained operational at various locations across the capital and that the measures would continue as part of efforts to maintain law and order.

Responding to a separate question about alleged extortionist Kalya Faruk, who was arrested in Mohammadpur and later released on bail before allegedly resuming extortion activities, he said decisions regarding bail fall within the jurisdiction of the courts.

“Whether they will punish someone or not is a matter for the court. But we will continue to do our job,” he said.

Nazrul Islam added that police would continue to arrest terrorists, drug traffickers and extortionists and place them before the courts for legal proceedings.
