Police Headquarters has issued a nationwide alert over fears of possible clashes between Awami League activists and members of other political parties around the party’s founding anniversary on 23 June.
In a communication sent on Thursday, all police units across the country were instructed to remain on alert and take necessary precautionary measures.
The directive said that Awami League leaders and activists, whose party is facing a ban on political activities, may attempt to hoist party flags at local offices and hold processions with banners marking the anniversary across different districts.
It warned that such activities could trigger confrontations with activists from other political parties, particularly members of the National Citizen Party and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, raising concerns over a possible deterioration in law and order.
The communication also cautioned that Awami League activists could turn hostile towards law enforcement personnel if they are prevented from carrying out such programmes.
Officials from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police and several district superintendents of police confirmed receiving the instructions.
Sources at Police Headquarters said the alert was issued as a precaution based on intelligence reports received from multiple agencies.
They added that security preparations have already been stepped up ahead of the anniversary, with intelligence surveillance also intensified across the country.
