Former state minister and BNP Vice Chairman Harun-Al-Rashid was honoured at a funeral prayer held at the South Plaza of Bangladesh’s National Parliament on Friday, attended by senior political leaders, lawmakers, government officials and family members.

Qari Md Abu Raihan, Pesh Imam of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat, led the funeral prayer, or janaza.

Prior to the prayer, Md Khaled Hossain Mahbub MP (Brahmanbaria-3 constituency) presented a brief account of Harun-Al-Rashid’s political career and public service.

Speaking at the janaza, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram paid tribute to the veteran politician, describing him as a respected parliamentarian who had been elected to the National Parliament on five times.

He said, “Harun-Al-Rashid would be remembered for his commitment to public service, his close engagement with ordinary citizens and his contribution to Bangladesh’s political landscape.”

The Speaker also highlighted the late leader’s longstanding association with BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, saying, “his death marked the loss of a dedicated figure within the country’s nationalist political movement.”

A number of prominent political figures attended the funeral prayer, including BNP Secretary General and Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, members of the cabinet, parliamentary leaders, lawmakers, officials from the Parliament Secretariat and political representatives from Brahmanbaria. Members of the media were also present.

Harun-Al-Rashid died on Thursday while being under treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. His passing prompted tributes from political colleagues and supporters who recognised his decades-long involvement in national politics and public service.

His death marks the end of a political career that spanned several decades and included multiple terms in Parliament, where he actively represented his constituents and contributed to national affairs.
