BNP Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, MP has said that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman was the first leader to initiate efforts to modernise agriculture in Bangladesh.

At a time when the country was facing food shortages, Ziaur Rahman took the initiative to modernise the agricultural sector and achieve self-sufficiency in food production, he said.

Moyeen Khan said this while addressing a Partner Congress organized by the Department of Agricultural Extension at the Palash Upazila Parishad on Friday.

The BNP leader said, “the current government has undertaken various initiatives to increase agricultural production in the country.”

“The government has taken a programme to plant 500 million fruit-bearing and forest trees over the next five years, which aims to make the country greener and more prosperous while helping to prevent environmental degradation,” he added.

Palash Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ishtiaq Ahmed chaired the programme while Azizul Haque, Deputy Director of the Narsingdi District Department of Agricultural Extension; Ayesha Akter, Upazila Agriculture Officer; Abdus Sattar, President of Palash Upazila BNP; Saiful Haque, General Secretary; Joint Secretary Bahauddin Bhuiyan Milton; and other local leaders were present.

At the end of the programme, Moyeen Khan distributed saplings, fertilisers, seeds, and cash assistance to local farmers.
