The government has approved a further Tk 140.11 crore in funding for private orphanages across Bangladesh, extending financial support to more than 116,000 orphaned children living in registered institutions nationwide.
According to an official order issued following approval from the Ministry of Social Welfare, the latest allocation will benefit 1,16,759 children residing in 4,209 private orphanages spread across all 64 districts of the country.
The funding represents the second instalment of government assistance for the 2025-26 fiscal year and has been released from the budget allocated to the private orphanage sector. The money has been placed under the supervision of local social services offices and relevant officials, who will oversee its distribution in line with established government guidelines.
Officials said the current fiscal year’s budget earmarked Tk 280 crore for private orphanages. Earlier, Tk 139.88 crore was distributed as the first instalment. With the release of the latest allocation, almost the entire annual budget for the programme has now entered the implementation phase.
Under the scheme, each eligible child will receive support equivalent to Tk 2,000 per month over a six-month period covering January to June 2026. This amounts to Tk 12,000 per child and is intended to help meet essential needs, including food and other day-to-day living expenses.
The Department of Social Services said the programme forms part of the government’s long-standing efforts to improve the welfare, protection and development of orphaned and vulnerable children. The initiative is designed to help ensure that children without parental support can grow up in a secure and supportive environment.
Authorities have instructed field-level officials to follow the Government Grant Allocation and Distribution Policy 2014 during the disbursement process. Monitoring mechanisms have also been put in place to ensure the funds are used appropriately and reach their intended beneficiaries.
Officials from both the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Department of Social Services expressed confidence that the timely release of the funds would help improve living conditions for thousands of children across the country while also assisting private orphanages in meeting their operational costs.
The latest allocation marks a significant step in completing the government’s annual support programme for orphanages, reinforcing ongoing efforts to provide essential care and protection for some of Bangladesh’s most vulnerable children.
