International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam has said Bangladesh’s media played a crucial role during the 2024 July Mass Uprising by ensuring the public received accurate information.

Speaking on Saturday at the annual general meeting of the Supreme Court Reporters Forum at Dhaka Club in the capital, he said the dissemination of accurate reporting, accounts of events and details of protest programmes helped unite the nation at the time.

“The media played a crucial role in the 2024 July Mass Uprising. The nation could not have become united if the media had not at that time disseminated accurate information, the true picture of events, and the programmes of the protesters,” he said.

He added that Bangladesh had now established what he described as a democratic system of governance after a long period, which he said had created an opportunity for the media to operate independently.

Turning to the work of the International Crimes Tribunal, Md Aminul Islam said the growing number of cases and the pace at which investigation reports were being submitted suggested that the tribunal and its prosecution team may need to be expanded. He also indicated that the investigation agency could require additional personnel.

He said the tribunal was working to ensure its judicial proceedings were conducted with the highest level of honesty and impartiality.
