To make roads safer and bring technology into the transport system, the government has announced that all public transport vehicles must install a GPS tracker.
Starting August 1, 2026, buses and other public vehicles will not be able to get or renew their fitness certificates without one. According to a recent government notice, just installing the device is not enough. The new rules clearly state that the GPS must stay turned on the entire time the vehicle is carrying passengers.
Transport officials explain that this technology will make it much easier to manage traffic and monitor fleets. With active tracking, authorities will be able to see exactly where a vehicle is, how fast it is travelling, and if it is sticking to its correct route.
By monitoring this information, the government hopes to stop drivers from speeding and significantly reduce the number of road accidents. Along with making the streets safer, the live GPS data will help police track down missing vehicles and prevent crimes on public transport.
