The Rapid Action Battalion’s (RAB-2) commander has warned that any attempt to create unrest or pose security threats on 23 June, marking the founding anniversary of the banned Awami League, will be dealt with firmly.
Additional Deputy Inspector General Md Naimul Hasan made the remarks while speaking to journalists at a briefing held at the RAB-2 headquarters in Mohammadpur’s Bosila area on Sunday afternoon.
The briefing was held to provide updates on recent operations targeting organised criminal groups and the recovery of illegal firearms in Dhaka.
Responding to questions about law and order preparations ahead of the date, he said, “security agencies had already taken precautionary measures across the country.”
“If anyone tries to create instability on the AL founding anniversary, by using weapons or in any other way, they will themselves come under risk. We will take necessary action to prevent any such attempts,” he also said.
His comments come as law enforcement agencies increase surveillance and operational readiness in key areas ahead of the anniversary, with heightened monitoring expected nationwide.
Naimul Hasan also outlined a series of recent arrests that RAB-2 made in connection with organised crime in the capital.
The RAB commander again said that on 17 June, officers arrested Abu Hasan Sayeed, 33, who was identified as the leader of the so-called ‘Kabji Kata Anwar group’. He also faces charges in a case of robbery and an attack on police personnel, which was filed with Adabar Police Station.
Following that operation, RAB-2 detained another suspect, Sohel, also known as ‘Mowra Sohel’, aged 28, during a raid on 20 June in the ULAB University area of Mohammadpur’s Beribadh zone. A foreign-made revolver was recovered during the arrest.
He stated, “Sohel is believed to lead the “Mowra Group”, which is allegedly involved in mugging and street crime in Mohammadpur. He was previously the second-in-command of the Abu Sayeed group.”
In a separate overnight operation, RAB-2 arrested Md Shafiqul Islam Sujon, 30, and Md Rasel, 23, from the Metro Housing area near Basila Road in Mohammadpur. During the raid, the officers seized two samurai swords and a Chinese cleaver.
RAB officials said, “Sohel is facing at least 14 cases across different police stations, including allegations of theft, robbery, attempted murder, serious assault, and drug-related offences. He also has two outstanding warrants.”
Sujon is linked to a narcotics case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station, while Rasel is named in a separate drug-related case registered with Hazaribagh Police Station.
RAB officials added that all units across the country have been instructed to remain on heightened alert ahead of the anniversary, with intensified monitoring in sensitive areas.
They said law enforcement agencies are prepared to respond swiftly to any attempt to disrupt public order.
