Bangladesh, Malaysia sign trade, security deals

Bangladesh and Malaysia have strengthened their relationship by signing new agreements on culture, business investment, and security. The two countries made the deals during official meetings in Malaysia’s administrative capital, Putrajaya.

The agreements mark the end of a two-day official visit by Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who travelled to Kuala Lumpur at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The day began with a private meeting between Tarique Rahman and Anwar Ibrahim to discuss shared goals. This was followed by a larger meeting with officials from both countries to review their ongoing relationship and discuss wider global issues.

A major focus of the talks was the labour market. The leaders discussed reopening Malaysia to Bangladeshi workers and finding ways to provide legal work permits for undocumented Bangladeshis who are currently living in Malaysia.

Trade was another important topic. Bangladesh asked for better access to sell its fruits and vegetables in Malaysian markets. The two sides also discussed Bangladesh’s hopes to join major regional groups, including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which is a massive free trade agreement.

Additionally, the two governments talked about working together to handle the Rohingya refugee crisis and supporting each other at the United Nations.

After the meetings ended, the two nations made their new commitments official. A cultural agreement was signed while Tarique Rahman and Anwar Ibrahim watched.

At the same time, foreign ministers from both countries exchanged two important documents. The first is a plan to encourage more business investment between the two nations. The second is an agreement to work together on research and training to stop terrorism, showing a shared focus on keeping the region secure.

The visit concluded with Tarique Rahman and Anwar Ibrahim holding a joint press conference, where they highlighted the growing partnership between Bangladesh and Malaysia.
