The DMP has arrested 26 leaders and activists linked to the Awami League and its affiliated organisations during coordinated operations across Dhaka.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed that the arrests were carried out on Monday across eight police stations in the capital.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Niaz Mehedi said the operations were conducted in different parts of the city as part of ongoing security measures.
“The arrests were made during operations conducted by eight police stations across Dhaka on Tuesday,” he said, adding that legal proceedings were underway.
According to police figures, the Dhanmondi Police Station detained 10 individuals, while Mohammadpur Police Station arrested eight. Two people were arrested in Ramna and Khilkhet, respectively, and one each in Bangshal, Kadamtali, Mirpur and Turag.
Officials said, "The drives targeted members of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies.”
“The party’s activities have been restricted under current political arrangements, and authorities have maintained heightened surveillance over its supporters,” they added.
Niaz Mehedi added that similar operations would continue to maintain public safety and normalcy in the law and order situation across Dhaka.
The arrests come amid increased security preparations in Dhaka and other parts of the country. On 18 June, police headquarters issued a nationwide alert warning of possible clashes involving Awami League activists and members of other political groups around the party’s founding anniversary.
The police headquarters instructed all units to remain on alert and take precautionary measures.
Separately, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed in five districts, including Cox’s Bazar, Madaripur, Sherpur, Gazipur and Moulvibazar, as authorities seek to prevent any outbreak of violence linked to political gatherings.
