A Dhaka court has placed television actor Md Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, widely known as Zaheer Alvi, on a two-day police remand for questioning in a case linked to the alleged abetment of his wife’s suicide.

The order was issued on Wednesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir after investigators sought further custody of the actor, according to state prosecutor Harun Or Rashid.

Investigating officers had initially requested a 10-day remand, arguing that Alvi needed to be interrogated in detail to uncover the circumstances surrounding the case and to identify other possible individuals involved.

The case relates to the death of Alvi’s wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra, who was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Mirpur DOHS in Dhaka on 28 February. She was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

According to the remand application, investigators allege that Alvi subjected his wife to mental abuse and humiliation.

It is also claimed that he made provocative social media posts and shared photographs with another woman, which reportedly caused her distress.

Ikra’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, subsequently filed a case alleging that prolonged domestic disputes and different forms of harassment by Alvi led to his daughter’s death.

On 18 June, Alvi surrendered before the court and applied for bail, which was rejected. He was then sent to jail.

Police also confirmed that Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Sheuli, had earlier surrendered in the same case and was granted bail.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ikra’s death remains ongoing.
